Geothermal area - Krysuvik

Some 25 km from Hafnarfjördur (about 30 minutes’ drive) is the famed Krísuvík geothermal area with its amazing solfataras, boiling mud springs, blowing steam vent and astonishing palette of colour.  Just a few minutes’ drive from there are the stunning Krísuvíkurberg cliffs, where sea birds by the thousands nest and the rolling waves of the Atlantic crash against the rugged shore.  Both are examples of amazing natural beauty.

For those who wish to explore the area on foot, the Hafnarfjördur Tourist Information Centre now offers a detailed map of the Krísuvík area, showing hiking and walking routes and describing the local history, geology, folklore, sightseeing attractions and plans for the future development of the site.

A word of caution: if you are heading into the lava or mountainous regions please take care, and always inform someone of your travels and when you expect to return.

Please note that there is no scheduled bus service in operation, so a car is required for visitors travelling on their own.
